# Refining Process Maps

> Simplify the map without removing diagnostically important complexity.

Merge nodes when they describe one coherent activity or the distinction adds no diagnostic value. Keep activities separate when they reveal ownership changes, controls, material waiting, rework, decisions or system boundaries.

A rework loop can return to the same node rather than duplicating the activity. Use client language for labels.

Validate the map by asking what is missing, which path is most common, which exceptions matter, where work waits and which activities genuinely happen in parallel.
